Summer on the Beach Quilt

May is my second month ever leading a quilt for the Love circle for do. Good Stitches! I've been staring at this block forever in Illustrator, trying to figure out how to "color" it. I'm not entirely convinced yet on this particular one... but I'm warming to it and I don't have any better ideas coming, ha! So, without further ado...

May 2016 : LOVE do. Good Stitches

This is my "Summer Sunset on the Beach" initial plan. I started with the idea of citrusy colors paired with navy blue, and went looking for some color palettes... which then inspired the working name. :)

There's two simple blocks, to be set on point. Both blocks are 8" (finished), so perfect for those 2.5" squares and strip scraps!

May 2016 : LOVE do. Good Stitches

Block A is anchored by rich blues and creamy-sandy neutrals, with pops of warm colors in the corners. The corner colors should be a mix of pale to medium greys (1-2 squares) and warm colors. A really desaturated light purple could also sneak into the grays. Try to keep the contrast reasonably strong — don't let the grey fade too much into the neutral, if you choose to place it there.

Block B is a simple square of medium watery hues framed by crisp white, so they stand out from the others, so Kona snow should be about as off-white as it gets. White-on-white prints would work.

I'll post a sample block set here after I stitch it up!

  1. I just want to double check my quilt math. Is the center square on block b 4.5" before sewing? And how many blocks would you like us each to make? I love the palette - this is going to be fun!!!!

    1. Yup, you're right, that should be the center block measurements! 2 of block A, 1 of block B, please! Yay! Glad you like it.

  2. Oh my, what a gorgeous mock up! I'll be delighted to make my contribution. I think Daisy is correct about the math. This would look lovely with solids. Do you have a preference about how many solids vs. prints we use? Not sure if you were thinking all prints...

    1. Solids are my comfort zone, so I think everything would look lovely in solids! (And then the real thing ends up looking *just* like my mockups. :D ) I lean towards blenders and near-solids myself, but I'll leave it to your judgement. Make what appeals to you and I'll get to play with it all in the end.

    1. Hi Kathy~ thank you, thank you! I was not planning a pattern for this quilt, but I could certainly add on cutting measurements for each of the blocks when I get the quilt top together. Each block finishes to 8", so 2.5" strips and squares are the basic building blocks. Hope that helps in the meantime?

  5. Just wandered over from Patch the Giraffe and her lovely version. Now, I'm taken with yours as well. They are a bit like night and day, as it were. Good luck with your project.
